Root: Government

Local/State Agencies

The difference between state and local governments is: states determine how much authority local governments can exercise and what type of local government is created. Local laws apply only to those within the local government’s jurisdiction.

Some examples of state/local agencies working together are: aging services, agriculture, economic development, historic preservation, libraries, public schools, tax and licensing, and transportation. Communities can work through local and state advocacy organizations, community activists and organizers, local and independent media and podcasts. The same energy that concerned citizens have put into issues of water, land use, voting practices, and affordable housing can be applied to better health outcomes at all levels of government.

Federal Agencies

Federal health agencies in the U. S. include the following:

  • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • The Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
  • Indian Health Services (IHS)
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

While many working inside these agencies are dedicated employees, it’s been noted that some high-level agency directors, captured by corporate interests, serve as revolving doors for the financial interests of big pharma/big business. The Covid-19 pandemic revealed the effect that Congressional-regulatory inattention and administrative censoring of information led to the loss of trust for the American people and medical professionals.

Federal Programs

There are many federal programs that support Americans, however those most directly related to health include Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services, and Rural Development.

Some of the programs within these three agencies include: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Rural Development Single and Multi-Family Housing, National School Lunch Program.

These federal health programs were hard fought and need to be updated to improve coverage for their specific populations.

Congress

Congress is the legislative branch of the U.S. government that makes our laws. Its responsibilities include funding government functions and programs, holding hearings to inform the legislative process, and oversight of the executive branch.

Congress consists of the Senate and  House of Representatives. Each state has two U.S. Senators and at least one U.S. Representative; the more residents a state has, the more U.S. Representatives it is allowed. There are currently 100 Senators and 435 Representatives. Congress enacts laws that influence the daily lives of all Americans and is intended to serve as the voice of the people.
