Their purpose is to influence how lawmakers write or vote on legislation related to particular issues. Companies, labor unions, trade associations and other influential organizations spend billions of dollars each year to lobby Congress and federal agencies. The number of lobbyists in Washington, D.C as of 2024 is estimated to be over 12,000.
